Breeding Younger Females

6/7/2013

I haven't had much luck getting females to lay eggs during the breeding season of their second winter. Most people have a rule of thumb, such as "making weight," before they even start introducing males. This season is different for me because I have the ultrasound machine. It comes in handy when I want to know which of the younger females (2011 hatch) are developing follicles.

One of them is this beautiful het red axanthic yellow belly female. She was produced by Tom Barnhart. When I saw her crazy pattern and rusted coloration I knew I had to have her. Now she is in the 1400g range and had 8mm follicles a month ago. After a couple lockups, she is now at 13mm and I'm confident that if she keeps feeding eagerly and locking up she will be a late layer this season....

The Hottest Morph: GHI

G-H-I = Gotta Have It! This is the most in demand morph right now. Just look at the combos: pastave super ghi, pastel lesser ghi, banan mojave ghi, and the list goes on.

Here's your opportunity to plug this gene into your breeding projects: A 2013 ghi male. Males born early in the hatching season have the best shot at breeding the following season. Get a jump start with this guy. Visit the availability page for pricing and more info.

Belly up and on the side, these sexy girls look like they're on the beach lounging, but they're really building follicles.

Super Orange Dream Enchis?

The od finally let the od lock up! ODs and enchis are two of my favorite morphs. Other lockups include ghi x pastel yb, ghi x pastel lesser, and hgwg x calico specter. It rained here for a day this past week and these guys took advantage of it.

Pastel Lesser Ovulation!

Pastel lesser ovulation*, bred by the ghi, hgwg, and eod. The * is because she jumped 20mm in less than a month and from what I've read there have been mixed results of slugs to good eggs when this happens, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one!

Boob Eggs!

4/29/2013

10 eggs from a ghi bred to a big normal female resulted in 6 good eggs, 3 boob eggs, and 1 slug. Out of the boob eggs, one has a nipple, one is half  boobed, and the other is side boobed. This past season I had a late clutch that had one boob egg and it hatched a tiny ivory that died before coming out, so I'm praying for this trio!
